In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often overlook the small acts of kindness that can make all the difference. For Valerie, a Lake County resident, and her beloved dog, Winston, support came at just the right time through One Health Organization's Voucher Program. Their story is one of resilience, care, and a few memorable moments that remind us of the joy pets bring to our lives.

A Letter From Valerie to One Health Organization

Hello. My name is Valerie DeCurtis. I’m the Dog Mom of Winston, my Goldendoodle. Last June I had to take him to the Vet as he was having issues as far as pooping was concerned. The first Vet said I had two options...very expensive surgery or put him down! I was devastated!!I am on Social Security which was making it extremely difficult to do anything for him. He was diagnosed w/ an enlarged prostate gland. I found another Vet to get a second opinion. I’m sorry but I couldn’t believe nothing could be done! The Vet did x-rays & said there wa sone more thing to try...FINASTERIDE! And it works! He’s been on it since & no issues. He has one refill left & then another Vet visit. My budget has been stretched about as far as it can go. I really need help w/ his next Vet appointment. I have two $25.00 vouchers but I know I will need more help w/ upcoming visits. This Veterinary Clinic is outstanding. It was a woman Vet (please don’t ask her name...I’m terrible at that). It’s Kirtland Veterinary Hospital. Their fees are not exorbitant which is very important to me. I am 73 & Winston is my protector as my husband is in a nursing home. I can’t lose this guy...he turned 8 on 11/22. Please I really need some more financial help. If you could provide me w/any more vouchers I truly would appreciate it. I had back surgery in January & then rehab. I had people take care of him for me. When I came home via squad, I told the EMT’S just let me get upright cause he doesn’t like uniforms. Well he managed to get out in the hall & could have cared less about uniforms! Winston & I are indebted to you for the help we both received last year. Thank you....

How Long Did Valerie’s Support Take?

As Valerie navigated the challenges of supporting her family and managing her own health, she also had to ensure Winston received the care he needed. The process took time, but each step brought her closer to the help she sought. From applying for assistance to receiving the much-needed veterinary care for Winston, Valerie's journey is a testament to perseverance and the impact of community support. Let's take a closer look at the timeline of this journey and the milestones that marked Winston's path to recovery.

  • 5/16/2022: Valerie, a Lake County resident, applied for Veterinary Care Vouchers from One Health Organization to help her pay for Winston’s vet care.
  • 5/16/2022: Staff reviewed Valerie’s application materials. She was placed on a waiting list.
  • 6/30/2022: Staff notified those on the waiting list that funds were available. Valerie claimed her Vouchers. Staff mailed the Vouchers to Valerie.
  • 7/22/2022: Dr. Jaccie Tufts of Kirtland Veterinary Hospital examined Winston and recommended a treatment plan. Valerie used her Vouchers to pay for the visit.
  • 2/7/2023: Valerie emailed her story to One Health Org. We knew this was a special case and asked her permission to share it.
  • 4/23/2023: Valerie granted permission and also shared more information related to her many health problems (physical and mental health). She was also supporting her daughter and grandchild during a rough time in their lives.
  • 5/31/2023: Valerie sent photos of Winston. He was a good boy, but... Winston was on the “uh oh list” because he took down the Christmas tree twice and also knocked her plant stand down.

The Power of Community and Resilience

From navigating the challenges of a waiting list to finally receiving the support needed for Winston's vet care, Valerie's experience is a testament to the impact of community-driven programs. Stories like hers highlight the importance of these initiatives and the profound difference they make in the lives of individuals and their beloved pets.
