Pet Parents

One Health Organization > We Can Help > Pet Parents

You may consider yourself a pet parent. Others may consider you a pet owner. A household with at least one pet is what we call a One Health Family.

Your health can impact the health of your pet, and the health of your pet can impact your health. While it's important to be healthy at home, work, or play, most of us spend most of the time with our pets at home. The best way to keep people and pets healthy at home is to be informed, and to have access to the health care resources you need.

If you live in Northeast Ohio and need information about resources you need to keep your pet (and yourself) healthy at home, then look for the resources we found for you below. If you have general questions about living a healthy life with your pet, search this web site. If you don't find what you need, don't hesitate to contact us by e-mail with your questions, concerns, or suggested topics to add. If you have specific questions about the health of your pet, please contact your veterinarian. If you have specific questions about your health, please contact your primary care physician.

One Health Organization would love to help every cat and dog in need in the Northeast Ohio area. There are times when pet parents may need services and resources that we cannot provide. Below is an incomplete list of additional resources. Not all services are available in all Northeast Ohio counties. Understandably, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to find the help you need. Also, we cannot be held accountable for the services provided by outside organizations. Please call them for additional information about their services.

The Differences Between an Emotional Support, Therapy, and Service Animal

Service Animal Definitions.

Service Dogs are dogs have specialized training for a specific task or work to help mitigate the effects of their disabled owner’s symptoms. Service dogs are defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as being primarily “working dogs” and are not considered pets.

Service dogs fall into three categories. Guide dogs help blind individuals to navigate the environment. Hearing dogs help deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to important sounds. Service dogs can be trained to assist individuals in wheelchairs, have balance issues, autism, seizures, or medical issues like low blood sugar or have psychiatric disabilities.

Therapy Animals are animals with their owners/handlers to improve the health of others with comfort and affection in settings such as hospitals or assisted living on a volunteer basis. Therapy dogs need to be trained in basic manners and obedience and must take continuing education workshops.

Emotional Support Animals (ESA) are animals that provide emotional support for comfort to combat loneliness and social phobias by providing companionship to their owners. The guidelines for ESA have become more restrictive because of the abused of the ESA category. More and more people have taken advantage of ESA of making their pet dogs into service dogs. Agencies are requiring letters from the individual’s doctor or mental health professional, verifying the individual with emotional support animal has a diagnosis.
